The City of St. John’s Recreation Division is currently seeking motivated, enthusiastic, and energetic individuals, who enjoy working outdoors, to work in our Summer Recreation Programs as Outdoor Recreation Instructors facilitating various outdoor programs and activities to groups of all ages. All are welcome to apply.
Outdoor Recreation Instructor duties must be comfortable advising on program content and lesson planning, providing direct leadership and instruction for group programs. They must advise on safety and emergency measures, ensure proper use, transport, storage and maintenance of equipment, providing opportunities for participants to develop leadership and team building skills, and completing various reports.
The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work. •Experience, or certification in, some or all the following activities: Paddle Sports, Wilderness Survival, Archery and/or Backcountry Camping •Excellent communication skills and a strong knowledge of group dynamics and team building •Leadership training (i.e. Completion of City of St. John's Youth Leadership Programs or equivalent) would be an asset Other Requirements •Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Criminal Record Screening Certificate AND Vulnerable Sector Check – Dated 2023 •Must be comfortable in an aquatic setting Additional Qualifications (provided free for successful candidates) •Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR Level C) •Standard First Aid •HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development Certification •Paddle Canada: Lake Canoe Skill Intermediate Tandem Certification would be an asset •Paddle Canada Introduction to Kayaking Certification would be an asset
These positions are required to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
These positions require physical agility and stamina to carry out required duties.
•Program start and end dates: June 27 – September 1, 2023 •Must be available to attend mandatory training. First possible training date beginning June 7 and continuing throughout the month of June. Some training may be offered virtually, evenings and/or weekends.
