The Opportunity

The City of St. John’s Recreation Division is currently seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and energetic individual to support and foster inclusive experience for participants of all ages facing barriers to participation, in a leadership role, as a Senior Counsellor - Inclusion in our Summer Recreation Programs (not including respite/personal care).

Accountabilities

The Senior Counsellor - Inclusion must be comfortable mentoring staff around inclusion, promoting inclusion and supporting recreation programs and staff as required, completing daily/ weekly stats and reports, and assist with supervising and evaluating inclusion counsellors. As required, they will provide one on one support to participants facing barriers to recreation (not including respite/personal care).

Qualifications

•Minimum of one (1) year post-secondary education in Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, Social Work, Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Nursing, Physiotherapy, ABA Therapy, or Occupational Therapy.
•Experience in program planning and implementation
•Experience in supervision and evaluation of staff and programs
•Leadership Training (i.e. Completion of City of St. John’s Youth Leadership Programs are equivalent) would be an asset
•Knowledge of various types of disabilities
•Hands-on experience working with children/youth/adults with disabilities, knowledge of adaptations and accessibility guidelines and behaviour management techniques
•ABA therapist training and/or experience working as a respite worker or with a home care agency would be an asset

Other Requirements
•Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Criminal Record Screening Certificate AND Vulnerable Sector Check – Dated 2023
•Valid Class 5 driver’s license with access to a vehicle (business insurance required)
•Must be comfortable in an aquatic setting as some positions involve activities such as swimming and canoeing

Additional Qualifications (Provided free for successful candidates)
•Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR level C)
•Standard First Aid
•HIGH FIVE® Principles of healthy Child Development Certification
•Paddle Canada Certification would be an asset (training in this area may be required upon hiring)

Physical Requirements

Many of these positions require physical agility and stamina to carry out required duties.

Must be comfortable in an aquatics setting as these positions involve activities such as swimming and canoeing.

Hours of Work

•Monday - Friday (up to 40 hours per week).
•Position start and end dates: May 23 - September 1, 2023
•Must be available to attend mandatory training. Some training may be offered virtually, evenings and/or weekends.
