The Opportunity

The City of St. John’s Recreation Division is currently seeking motivated, enthusiastic, and energetic individuals who enjoy working with children/youth to work in a leadership role in our Summer Recreation Programs as Senior Counsellors.

Accountabilities

Senior Counsellors must be comfortable planning and implementation programming, completing daily/weekly statistics and reports, requesting supplies, supervising, and evaluating program staff, monitoring program content and schedules, ensuring the safety of participants and staff. They must possess strong leadership skills, and effective communication and customer service skills.

Qualifications

•Minimum of one (1) year post-secondary education
•Leadership experience/training (i.e., completion of City of St. John's Youth Leadership Programs or equivalent)
•Experience planning and implementing programming in a group setting and the ability to instruct various sports, outdoor activities, arts/crafts, and low organized games
•Experience in supervision and evaluation of staff and programs
•Knowledge of child development and behavior management techniques

Other Requirements
•Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Criminal Record Screening Certificate AND Vulnerable Sector Check– Dated 2023
•Must be comfortable in an aquatic setting as some positions involve activities such as swimming and canoeing

Additional Qualifications (provided free for successful candidates)
•Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR Level C)
•Standard First Aid
•HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development Certification
•Paddle Canada: Lake Canoe Introduction Tandem Certification would be an asset (Mandatory for Camp Explore, Outdoor, Youth Expeditions, and Community Camp)
•Paddle Canada Introduction to Kayaking Certification would be an asset (Mandatory for Youth Expeditions)

Physical Requirements

Many of these positions require physical agility and stamina to carry out required duties.

Must be comfortable in an aquatics setting as these positions involve activities such as swimming and canoeing.

Hours of Work

•Monday - Friday (up to 40 hours per week)
•Must be available to attend mandatory training. First possible training date beginning June 13 and continuing throughout the month of June. Some training may be offered virtually, evenings and/or weekends.
•Program start and end dates: June 27 – September 1, 2023
•Dates may vary according to placement location.
