Job Description
The Rooms - Chief Executive Officer (CEO) The Rooms is one of Canada’s leading cultural institutions, mandated to care for and present the collections of its legacy organizations: the Provincial Museum, Regional Museums, the Art Gallery and the Archives. The Rooms brings these collections to life through exhibitions, research, education and community engagement for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and audiences across Canada. Since opening in 2005, The Rooms has established award-winning galleries, presented national travelling exhibitions, raised significant funds and built strong community and national support.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is seeking a dynamic and experienced executive leader to guide The Rooms through its continued development as one of Canada’s pre-eminent cultural institutions and to secure its long-term financial and organizational sustainability.

The Role
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is accountable for the overall leadership, strategic direction and management of The Rooms. Responsibilities include overseeing strategic planning, programs and policy development; stewarding human and financial resources; and leading corporate, philanthropic and partnership development efforts.

The CEO represents The Rooms publicly and fosters strong, respectful relationships with government, funders, arts and heritage organizations and Indigenous communities.

Qualifications and ExperienceThe CEO must bring executive leadership experience and a deep understanding of museum, art gallery and archival ethics; cultural stewardship; reconciliation imperatives; and the evolving role of cultural institutions in a national context. The successful candidate will demonstrate:
• broad knowledge of cultural resource disciplines
• people-management and organizational leadership skills
• proven experience in fundraising and partnership development
• experience in project management and sustainable organizational development
• a demonstrated commitment to reconciliation and to building relationships with Indigenous communities and stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will exhibit strategic vision, sound fiscal oversight, effective decision-making, change leadership, collaboration, and strong communication skills. Knowledge of public administration is considered an asset. Qualifications are typically gained through graduate-level education in business, fine arts, museum studies, arts administration or a related field, combined with significant progressively responsible senior leadership experience in the cultural, arts, heritage or related sectors. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
