Lead Marine Guide

We are seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Lead Marine Guide for sea kayak, big canoe and zodiac tours. The ideal candidate will be passionate about coastal adventures, local history, and marine ecology, with the ability to provide engaging and informative tours on the water. The guide will ensure client safety and comfort while fostering an exceptional guest experience throughout the journey.

Key Responsibilities:

Tour Planning & Coordination

  • Pre-Tour Briefings: Prepare and conduct pre-tour orientation sessions, providing guests with safety protocols and trip itineraries.
  • Marine Scheduling: Plan daily water-based itineraries based on group abilities and weather conditions.

Guided Marine Adventures

  • Paddling Leadership: Lead and guide guests on sea kayaking and big canoe tours, ensuring proper technique, safety, and group cohesion.
  • Motorized Tours: Provide expert interpretation during zodiac tours and assist with hosting culinary and cultural experiences on the water.

Cultural and Environmental Interpretation

  • Marine Ecology: Offer accurate and engaging interpretation of local marine life (whales, seabirds), coastal geology, and the history of the region.
  • Storytelling: Create an immersive experience for guests by sharing knowledge of the surrounding communities and landscape of Gros Morne National Park.

Guest Safety & Comfort

  • On-Water Safety: Ensure the physical safety and emotional well-being of guests while on the water.
  • Risk Management: Monitor weather patterns and sea states constantly to make real-time "go/no-go" decisions.

Administrative & Equipment Maintenance

  • Gear Management: Resupply necessary inventory (first aid kits, dry bags, safety gear), and ensure all marine equipment is cleaned and maintained.
  • Front Desk Support: Work the front desk as needed, including using the POS system, taking bookings, and registering paddlers.
  • Content Creation: Assist in supporting and contributing to the social media program by capturing photos and videos from the water.

Required Skills & Certifications

  • Standard First Aid: Including CPR certification.
  • Paddle Canada Sea Kayak Level One Certification with seasoned experience; Sea Kayak Level Two an asset.
  • Big Canoe Paddler Skills Certification an asset; training may be provided.
  • Risk Management: Expertise in water-based safety and group management in changing sea conditions.
  • Communication: Enthusiastic, assertive and friendly personality with excellent interpersonal skills.
