ACCOUNTABILITIES

SJIAA is seeking a Manager, Safety and Environment to join our senior leadership team. If you are passionate about safety, environmental sustainability, and leading initiatives that support a safe and healthy airport environment, this may be the role for you.

In this position, you will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of the Airside Safety Management System (SMS), Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Program, and the Environmental Management System (EMS). Reporting to the Director of Operations, you will play a critical leadership role in fostering a proactive culture of safety, accountability, and environmental stewardship.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety Oversight

  • Lead and manage the organization’s OHS program, SMS, EMS, and wildlife management program.
  • Oversee the organization’s contractor safety management program and monitor tenant/passenger safety initiatives and incidents.
  • Lead, train, and support employees and management in conducting risk and hazard assessments, safety orientations, incident investigations, inspections, and safety/regulatory audits.
  • Chair the organization’s OHS committee and SMS committee.
  • Update and monitor the safety training database and ensure all employees are trained per applicable federal and provincial government safety requirements.

Environmental Oversight

  • Create guidelines and policies to address greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction, de-carbonization initiatives and biodiversity concerns that align with the organization’s carbon management plan.
  • Manage the EMS to ensure effectiveness and compliance with federal and provincial government environmental legislation and regulations.
  • Monitor environmental conditions within the airport complex and prepare reports on environmental performance.
  • Develop and implement environmental emergency response procedures
  • Manage the wildlife control program to ensure effectiveness and regulatory compliance.
  • Manage the Airport’s de-icing contract and represent SJIAA on the Airline Consultative Committee De-Icing Subcommittee.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, provincial, and aviation safety regulations.
  • Serve as liaison with regulatory agencies, including Transport Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Establish risk management policies and provide training on safety protocols.
  • Assist with the organization’s enterprise risk management framework.

Investigations and Corrective Action

  • Assist and/or lead investigations into safety and environmental incidents, infractions, and related issues.
  • Recommend and implement corrective actions, including disciplinary measures when appropriate.
  • Maintain the safety incidents database and operational risk register, analyze safety performance data, identify trends, and ensure effective corrective actions are implemented.
  • Coordinate with legal counsel and represent SJIAA in safety and environment-related matters.

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary degree with major course work in health, safety and environmental studies.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation.
  • Minimum five years’ experience in safety and/or environmental management, including a minimum of three years in a managerial role.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational health and safety regulation, aviation safety requirements (Canadian Aviation Regulations) and federal and provincial government environmental regulations.
  • Experience implementing a safety management system or an environmental management system, preferably in an airport or aviation-related environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage budgets.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to adapt in high-pressure situations and provide solutions quickly and effectively.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC).
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Airside Vehicle Operators Permit (AVOP) permit.
  • Ability to work on-call for after-hours and weekend responses when required
  • Participate in the operations team on-call schedule.
