Legendary Coasts of Eastern Newfoundland (LCEN) is the designated Destination Management Organization (DMO) for the eastern region of Newfoundland and Labrador. LCEN works collaboratively with industry stakeholders, communities, and governments to grow the visitor economy through strategic marketing, destination development, tourism innovation, and meaningful partnerships. The organization supports sustainable tourism that enhances the social, cultural, environmental, and economic well-being of the region.
Position Summary
The Executive Director is the senior leader responsible for overseeing all aspects of LCEN’s operations, programs, partnerships, and strategic direction. Reporting to a volunteer Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides vision, leadership, and operational oversight to ensure the organization fulfills its mission to grow and support tourism in Eastern Newfoundland. This role requires a dynamic, strategic thinker with strong communication, management, and relationship-building skills, and a deep understanding of the tourism landscape.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership & Governance
- Support and advise the Board in governance, policy development, and compliance with by-laws.
- Lead the development and execution of strategic and operational plans in alignment with the provincial tourism strategy.
- Maintain official records and ensure legal, regulatory, financial, and funding compliance.
- Represent LCEN at industry, government, and community events and in key partnerships.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of LCEN, including budgeting, HR, program delivery, and reporting.
Destination Development & Strategic Initiatives
- Drive destination development initiatives that enhance tourism infrastructure, product offerings, and community readiness.
- Build and maintain relationships with tourism operators, community organizations, municipalities, and government partners.
- Lead engagement and collaboration activities with operators, municipalities, and communities.
- Oversee management of strategic cross-border partnership with Saint Pierre et Miquelon.
- Attend and represent LCEN at industry events, trade shows, meetings, and conferences.
Financial Management & Funding
- Develop and manage annual budgets; ensure transparent and responsible use of funds.
- Ensure strong financial controls, accurate accounting, and adherence to budget.
- Write and submit funding proposals, prepare and submit all required reports and claims to funders, and ensure compliance with all funding agreements.
Human Resources & Organizational Culture
- Manage a high-performing, professional team of 4 staff; oversee recruitment, onboarding, and performance management.
- Foster a positive, mission-driven workplace culture that supports innovation and accountability.
- Ensure compliance with all HR-related policies and employment legislation.
Qualifications and Experience
- Post-secondary education in Marketing and Communications, Tourism Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of senior leadership experience, ideally in tourism, nonprofit management, economic development, or community engagement.
- Proven experience managing budgets and strategic initiatives.
- Proven experience in leading and coaching teams, with a collaborative approach to performance management.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Familiarity with tourism trends, funding models, and government relations.
- A self-starter with a collaborative spirit and a strong connection to Newfoundland and Labrador.
Working Conditions
- This role is based in Eastern Newfoundland and includes a mix of office-based and remote work.
- Travel throughout the region and occasionally out-of-province is required.
- May include evening and weekend commitments depending on events and stakeholder needs.
