The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Occupational Health and Safety, the Occupational Health and Safety Advisor is part of a team that is responsible for contributing to a positive safety culture with all City of St. John's employees. The OHS Advisor plays a pivotal role in the prevention of workplace related injuries and illnesses and promotion of a safe and healthy workplace.

Accountabilities

  • Provide guidance to City departments to ensure all work meets compliance under OHS legislation using evidence-based practices, CSA standards and the respective Codes.
  • Assist in the development, evaluation and implementation of the City’s OHS management program, policies and procedures.
  • Participate in incident investigations, make recommendations for improvement and complete follow up audits to ensure recommendations have been communicated to staff and implemented.
  • Collaborate with departments to ensure contractor orientations, inspections and activities meet the standards of the City’s OHS Program.
  • Conduct regular worksite inspections on behalf of the City, ensure compliance with the City Program Manual and all relevant legislation.
  • Liaise with all internal and external authorities, prepare reports and ensure compliance.
  • Participate in audits, emergency planning activities and OHS meetings.
  • Any other safety-related activities that the Manager deems necessary.

Qualifications

Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in Occupational Health and Safety, industrial hygiene, environmental health or other related field supplemented by a diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. Possession of a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or equivalent is considered an asset.

Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years experience working in a similar role in Occupational Health and Safety. Preference will be given to candidates who have had roles of similar responsibility and complexity with large employers and/or diverse business operations.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Working Conditions

  • Office environment using a personal computer, telephone and desk
  • Field work - visits to City and contractor work sites, in various stages of completion
  • May be required to traverse uneven terrain, climb ladders, and work in construction zones with heavy equipment and traffic
  • Emergency situations with unknown/uncontrolled hazards

Physical Requirements

This position is classified as safety-sensitive. The City of St. John’s has a comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Policy to ensure fitness for work and the completion of a satisfactory alcohol and drug test is a mandatory pre-employment requirement.

Hours of Work

Monday to Friday 9:00AM to 4:30PM

This position is required to participate in after hours on call rotational work.

The City of St. John's has a flexible work protocol which may apply to this position and is entirely operationally dependent.
