The Opportunity

The City is seeking an Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator to join its Occupational Health and Safety Team, reporting to the Manager, Occupational Health and Safety. This role is integral to fostering a positive safety culture across all City of St. John’s employees. The Coordinator will support the City’s Occupational Health and Safety program by collaborating with departments, employees, and OH&S Advisors to ensure safety initiatives are effectively implemented, documented, evaluated, and monitored. As a key member of the team, the Coordinator plays a vital role in promoting safety education and prevention throughout the organization.

Accountabilities

  • Support City departments to ensure all work meets compliance under OHS legislation using evidence-based practices, CSA standards and the respective Codes.
  • Assist in the development, evaluation and implementation of Safe Work Practices and Procedures, FLRA and Hazard Assessments.
  • Assist in the development, evaluation and implementation of emergency response procedures.
  • Collaborate with HR and Managers to ensure staff receive onboarding safety orientation and other related regulatory safety training.
  • Conduct ergonomic assessments and support the MSI prevention program.
  • Prepare safety reports, identify safety trends and ensure compliance related to the OHS Program.
  • Participate in external and internal safety audits.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, training sessions and incident investigations.
  • Any other safety-related activities that the Manager deems necessary.

Qualifications

Applicants must have successfully completed a Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. Possession of a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or equivalent is considered an asset.

Applicants must have a minimum of 1 – 3 years’ experience working in a similar role in Occupational Health and Safety. Preference will be given to candidates who have had roles of similar responsibility and complexity with large employers and/or diverse business operations.

Applicants must have knowledge of all current OHS legislation and Workplace NL requirements.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Working Conditions

  • Office environment using a personal computer, telephone and desk
  • May have to travel between City facilities

Physical Requirements

This position is classified as safety sensitive. The City of St. John's has a comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Policy to ensure fitness for work and the completion of a satisfactory alcohol and drug test is a mandatory pre-employment requirement.

Hours of Work

Monday to Friday 9:00am to 4:30pm
